About communism and paranoia - Living in China pt1

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 24, 2009, 10:28 AM
.

I just can't believe it.
Some happenings during the last days really got me dumbfounded.

Do you know the last one, people?
Today, in China, "they" have just BLOCKED THE ACCESS TO GOOGLE.
"Huh?"

NO GOOGLE IN CHINA.

Can you believe that?

The evil mind rapist Google is now inaccessible to almost everyone here.
I say "almost" because, luckly, they are not smart enough to block the tunnels and all those proxy sites. DUH!

Normally I had to recourse to tunnels in order to access web domains like "wordpress", "blogspot", "youtube" and many others, because it's also BLOCKED here.
Yeah, no Youtube for chinese.

And because of this damn internet censorship, sometimes the connection gets really slow. $#Y$Y!

Somethings you just can't believe here. Like... Do you know A LOT of locals don't say a single word about any political subject... And you don't need to be cursing communism, just start a simple and light talking about a random political case involving China and you'll see how crazy it is. People just look around (maybe to check if there isn't anyone else listening to your evil words) and IGNORE what you just said and start talking about something else.
During my first days here I didn't realize the reason why. Innocently, I thought it was because they couldn't understand english very well or due to my stupid chinese. Well, sometimes they act weird without any obvious reason for me... So, who could know?
Then a swedish classmate of mine told me they avoid political discussions because they fear "spies". YES, THEY BELIEVE THERE ARE SOME KIND OF SPIES WALKING DISGUISED AMONG US AND PAYING ATTENTION TO WHATEVER YOU SAY OR DO.
I didn't believe him when he said that. I mean, it couldn't be real. Where the hell I am? North Korea?

Then I finally asked my father, who speaks chinese fluently and lived in China for 16 years. Guess what?
He told me to stop talking about this stuff in public. I think he forgot mentioning "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU."

Then, after questioning some other people, now I can tell you: A LOT (just because I want to avoid saying EVERYONE) of people here do believe big brother is watching them. So they simply DON'T discuss any political subjetc here. Maybe inside a soundproof chamber.

You can't discuss politcs.
Uou can't have free access to internet (not even google!!!).
Every foreign movie here is censored - when they are not simply banned. (It seems chinese are too touchy to watch violence and sex.)
A lot of games are also banned here, for example THE SIMS 1, 2 and 3. EVIL GAME.
And I don't need to mention that ALL news are censored, obviously. Inside China, you will mostly hear that China is the best place in the world. Well, at least that's what I heard last time I watched CCTV 9, the "Central China TV" in english.

Hah. Can you believe I haven't seen anything more spicy than a Disney's movie kiss on TV? Yeah. They barely kiss on TV. 60+ channels.
I'm not wishing to see porn, but... you know, it's NORMAL to have a NORMAL kiss.
"And why do you want to see a kiss on TV? Find a boyfriend! o.õ"
Duh, I don't really want to see anything, I just think it's too weird. Abnormal.

And believe me, I don't like to judge things as "normal" or "abnormal".
I'm normally not the most normal person myself.
